In the afternoons, groups of people gather around the steps of municipal offices to chat. Locals here speak Afrikaans that is rich and idiomatic, and peppered with Nama words. Even if you don't understand Afrikaans or Nama, the stories will carry you away on a journey through the ages and wonders, written in the storytellers' faces.
All in all, it’s a very friendly place where you will enjoy driving around and meeting the people. Photographs may be taken, but do ask permission first. There is no petrol station in Kuboes (the nearest place to get fuel is at the Baken Mine at Sanddrift, about 25 kilometres away). At this stage, this is the only town in the Richtersveld with cell phone reception. There are no banks or Automated Teller Machine (ATM) facilities.
You can explore the wonders of the Richtersveld area step by step, hiking on one of the trails set up around Kuboes. If you prefer to discover nature with a 4x4, demarcated trails have been laid out to offer you a unique experience. If you want to know more about specialised endemic vegetation, the life of a goatherd and the Nama culture, you can arrange for a local guide to take you on an informative tour around Kuboes or into the Richtersveld National Park.
There is also a lovely trail at Kuboes which takes you past the wondergat to the top of Cornells Kop, winds its way past a variety of succulents and affords beautiful views of the Richtersveld, the Orange River and dunes of Namibia. Students from Kuboes helped lay out the trail. In town, an old white-washed church, standing out in spectacular contrast to the blue sky, dates back to 1893. It is well worth a visit.
