History of Underberg

A Trading Post

The town of Underberg in KwaZulu-Natal is located on the Mzimkhulu River and originated back in 1886 as a trading post set up by a local farmer.

The authorities, however, were of a mind that the town lacked adequate natural defences and thus established Himeville right next door (6 km from Underberg) around a fort built in the 1890s. Underberg was named (rather obviously) as it nestled below The Berg.
