Goukamma Traverse Trail

The Terrain and Trail

Trail runners start remotely from the Goukamma River pont on the eastern side of the reserve, traversing the reserve from east to west to finish in Sedgefield on the Village Green. With this in mind, runners must arrange transport between these points.

Once on the trail, you follow single- and jeep track along ancient dune systems. The run will take runners along single-track for the most part, with short sections of jeep track and an unfortunate 3 km of tar to the finish. 90% of the route takes runners along ridges and through ancient dune systems, so the substrate is mostly compact dune sand, potentially soft in places.

The terrain is varied; steep climbs; flat, winding sections of trail; shady milkwood forests; eye-popping ocean vistas, all highlighted with flourishes of fynbos.

Some tracks are stabilized with ‘log steps’. Part of the beauty of this trail run is that you will be ridge-running atop high, grass-covered dunes, with breathtaking views of the ocean to the south and of some of the wide vleis and lakes to the north.

It’s quite simply a ‘WOW’ run capturing the absolute essence and spirit of the Garden Route at its very best.
