George is a centrally located town, situated halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth along the spectacular Garden Route. George is the ideal base from which to explore the area, as well as the many diverse scenic wonders of the Garden Route.
George is the capital of the Garden Route, the largest urban centre and the only city. It is; however, not along the coast like Plettenberg Bay or Knysna. George is a golfer's dream destination.
The George Golf Club, which has consistently been on the list of the top 10 golf courses in South Africa, is found here, as well as the Fancourt Estate. Golf aside, George is also home to an attractive cathedral and a museum. The George Museum houses a wonderful collection of fairy paintings that draws inspiration from the surrounding scenery.
There is fun 1,5-km-long historical walking tour including the George Museum. The main theme of the museum is the region's timber industry, but it also has an important collection of vintage gramophones and musical instruments It also has a small outdoor complex filled with fynbos and forest trees in a miniature “Indigenous Forest”.
Also to be seen along the walk is the King Edward VII Library (the best example of Edwardian architecture in the town), the old slave tree, St Mark's Anglican Cathedral (1850) and the historic Dutch Reformed Church (1842), with its magnificent yellowwood ceiling and hand carved stinkwood pulpit.
The George Timber Route meanders from the George Museum past several tree species and furniture manufacturers. An interesting collection of railway equipment, coaches and locomotives, as well as a replica of an old station, can be seen at the Outeniqua Railway Museum.
The closest beach to George is Victoria Bay, a charming and beautiful little beach nestled against the mountain. Here visitors can fish, bathe or sun tan whilst taking in your incredible surroundings. George is the major accommodation centre of the Garden Route and houses a vast range of facilities to suit every need, requirement, taste and budget.
There are also many historical landmarks in George. George is also home to the main airport of the Garden Route, with regular scheduled flights to Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. This airport connects visitors to all main centres in South Africa and main roads and rail link with the Klein Karoo hinterland. George offers visitors the perfect break for the bustling city life.
