If you have time, you simply must explore the Panorama Route, one of the most dramatic drives in South Africa (and one of the favourite parts of the country for some). Starting at the lovely town of Graskop, the Panorama runs along the edge of the eastern Drakensberg escarpment.
Stop off at the viewing points known as God’s Window and Wonder View for a breathtaking lookout over the Lowveld (if the weather is clear). Next up is the spectacular Bourke’s Luck Potholes, with a paved walking path and graceful bridges spanning the deep, smooth ‘potholes’ that were formed by the erosive rolling of rocks in the river bed.
Further along, the gaping Blyde River Canyon (3rd largest in the world) demands a stop – there are several outstanding viewpoints but don’t miss Three Rondavels for the most iconic vista. Additional stops can be made at the dramatic Lisbon and Berlin Waterfalls, the riverside tea garden, and other historical markers (mainly dedicated the doughty Voortrekkers).
From the Blyde River Canyon, you can access Hoedspruit and the central gates, via the beautiful pass through the Abel Erasmus tunnel. Or you can retrace your steps to Graskop and follow Kowyns Pass down to Hazyview and the Kruger or Phabeni Gates.
