Cumberland Nature Reserve

Spectacular Grassland

Cumberland Nature Reserve is a little known “gem” just outside Pietermaritzburg in the general vicinity of Wartburg. The area is characterised by steep cliffs dropping onto acacia wooded plains and bush thickets that line the majestic Umgeni River below.

Atop the cliffs one will find open grass plains inhabited by the elusive Oribi antelope. When the reserve was established in 1996 by the much of the area had been mined for sand leaving open scars invaded by alien vegetation. A rehabilitation programme has resulted in spectacular grassland inhabited by not only shy Oribi, but herds of plains game, too.
