Attractions in Richmond

Richmond Horse Museum

The Richmond Horse Museum is a lovely little spot in town that depicts the vintage Karoo lifestyle from way back when. Memorabilia such as old army gear, Victorian furniture and fashions, as well as horse riding equipment are on display in what used to be a boarding house. More recently, is housed inside a cabinet maker's workshop and residence.

There is also a collection of rare old guns and pistols, muzzle loaders, and hunting rifles. One of the most cherished items on exhibit is a pump organ dating from 1745 and still in perfect working order.

Modern Art Project

The Modern Art Project (MAP) in Richmond is a contemporary showcase of art from both established and emerging artists. It is done outside the traditional setting of a gallery, so pieces are showcased both at its home in Richmond and other towns in the area’s restaurants and hotels.

You will find MAP exhibitions in Hout Bay, Dullstroom, Pretoria and Graskop, as well as Cullinan Hotel. MAP's gallery and artists' retreat in Richmond is a trendy building that attracts quite a few holidaymakers annually.

The project was founded in 2015 by art patron Harrie Siertsema and artist/curator Abrie Fourie. Their vision is to create a space for artists in the new 'empathetic economy' and they aim to disintegrate 'high' and 'low' culture by making art more accessible to the public.
