One of the attractions of Witsand is the quiet coastal atmosphere and the vast white beach, which stretches off into infinity.
It is a Blue Flag Beach, which means it is clean, well managed, environmentally conscious, wholly safe and even able to provide educational services.
The beach is packed during holidays with visitors soaking up the sun or taking part in a variety of activities from fishing to boating to snorkelling and windsurfing. It is also a safe swimming beach so the kids can enjoy the serene waters.
As the area has an abundance of bird and plant life, make sure you explore the surrounding areas of the beach, as well as the rock pools.
Witsand is known as the Whale Nursery of the South African Coast and attracts many whale seekers from all around the world. In spring, calving Southern right whales cruise up and down the coastline, close to shore. They make their way to Witsand during the months of June and November to mate and calve.
In 2006, Witsand counted a record total of 165 whales, of which 69 calves were born. You’ll be sure to spot a Southern right at Witsand, or if you are the more adventurous types, you can go diving with the whales and get an up close interaction with the majestic creatures.
The Pili Pili Adventure Centre is situated at the Breede River in Witsand and offers excellent water sports that allows visitors to take full advantage of the gorgeous river. The centre runs from a small private harbour and you’ll have access to both the river and beach for added fun.

Thanks to the river’s quiet waters, these activities can be done for leisure or just the thrill of it. The centre’s pro are well trained and will provide you with the best guidance possible.
