Explore Charming Sights

Other than beautiful old buildings and quaint shops, Aberdeen is your typical one-horse town with lots of charm but not a long list of attractions. The ones they have, however, are worth stopping for on your Karoo Heartland road trip.

A trip to Fonteinbos Nature Reserve is a worthwhile visit, and see Vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus).

Fonteinbos is the local nature reserve just outside Aberdeen. A natural spring has its source within the reserve and is known as "Die Oog" (The Eye). The reserve is home to a plethora of birdlife as well as vervet monkeys, springbok, ostrich and some kudu.

For the adventurous type, the Cambedoo Mountains near Aberdeen offer trails for 4x4 vehicles and mountain biking. The landscapes are simultaneously rugged, beautiful and unusual; making it a particularly fun destination to explore. Most of the terrain on these trails have rocky sections that become very muddy after the rains, and grasslands, with some steep inclines and descents on the rocky areas.
