The town of Zeerust is situated on the acacia-lined banks of the Klein Marico River that passes through the town before joining the Groot Marico at Skuinsdrif in the North West Province. In 1867, whilst building a church on his farm, Casper Coetzee died, but his brother-in-law completed it and named it Coetzee-Rust in memory of his late brother. This name was later abbreviated to Zeerust and municipal status was obtained in 1936. The farm’s original Tswana name was Sefathlani/Sebatlani, meaning ‘dusty place’.
The dense and thorny Bushveld vegetation of the Marico region conceal a number of amazing historical and cultural treasures, such as the Dinokana and Livingston Mission Stations, Marula Kop, the Monsega Monument and Kleinfontein Memorial. It also allows the wildlife to flourish in the many game farms and reserves.
