Fully Catered Wilderness Trails

The guided hikes at Hluhluwe-Imfolozi are exceptional and adventurous outdoor folk can book onto either two-or four-day trails. These walking safaris allow you to discover sections of the park where there are no roads, so the only access is on foot.

The Short Wilderness Trail (two days) is fully catered and bedding, backpack, food and water are provided, with nights spent at a camp in the wilderness area.

The four-day, fully catered Base Camp Trail winds through the pristine Zululand bush, rich in diverse fauna and flora, as well as cultural heritage. The best time to hike varies greatly according to recent rainfall and denseness of vegetation, but March/April or October/November are generally the best times to hike.

The reserve is home to the second largest population of Wild Dogs (or African painted dog) in the country. These incredible carnivores are very rare and were almost on the brink of extinction when, the Wild Dog Project was started in 1980. The dogs are now being monitored and new bloodlines are being introduced.By Jacques Marais
