White River’s peaceful streets - shaded with flamboyant and other flowering trees - offer the perfect escape from the rat race. This archetypal Panorama Region town is the perfect stopover before tripping into the Kruger, with vibrant art galleries, craft markets, museums and trendy eateries lining the laid-back streets.
The setting is typically Lowveld, within the embrace of the lushness of the Crocodile River Valley and within easy reach of any number of natural wonders.
White River was established in or around 1890, but really came into being when Lord Milner decided to establish an irrigation farming scene here on a tributary of the Crocodile River.
This inflow was called 'Emansimhlope', or ‘White Water’, and many unemployed British soldiers flocked here after the Anglo-Boer war. The town’s many names all refer to the white colour of the water in the nearby river, caused by high levels of kaolin.
White River, is an important farming and tourism centre and is one of the most charming towns on the Panorama Route.
The streets shaded with flowering trees beckon one towards the other beauty spots in the vicinity of three irrigation dams, offering an impressive view of the Crocodile River Valley.
As it is so close to the Kruger National Park, it is a great base from which to explore the park and other attractions in the area.
