Malopo Game Reserve is situated on the border of Botswana near Vryburg in the North West, and covers 24 000ha of southern Kalahari biome. The reserve has flourishing herds of eland, blue wildebeest, gemsbok, red hartebeest, kudu, zebra, impala, gemsbok, springbok, steenbok, duiker and warthog. Predators such as cheetah, caracal, black-backed jackal, African wildcat, brown hyena and small spotted genets are also to be seen.
Visitors can enjoy both day and night game drives, and a number of artificial waters have been constructed where concentrations of game can be found. Leon Taljaard Nature Reserve covers 2 000 ha of landscape near the town of Vryburg. Wildlife that call the reserve home includes white rhino, eland, buffalo, black and blue wildebeest, waterbuck, mountain zebra and springbok. There are around 110 bird species to spot in the bush areas of the reserve.
It is a perfect family-friendly destination that offers activities like hiking trails, bird watching and nature walks. There are two entrances to the reserve - one on the Molopo road and one on the Kuruman road, close to the town of the same name. The Kuruman entrance was built as a prison to house Boer prisoners captured by the British during the South African War.
