Commercial Hub of the West Coast

Vredenburg is a West Coast town located in the Western Cape, known for its prosperous wheat and wool farming and great holiday activities. The town was laid out in 1883 near the site of a freshwater spring that gave rise to constant quarrels between two neighbouring farmers.

In 1875 a Dutch Reformed Church was built, and, as the church often had to settle disputes, it was decided to rename the village Vredenburg meaning ‘Town of Peace’.

Vredenburg is the commercial hub of the West Coast, drawing trade from St Helena Bay, Paternoster, Langebaan, Velddrif and Saldanha Bay – the nearby towns which constitute the West Coast Peninsula area. During springtime, the coastline along Vredenburg is covered in colorful bursts of daisies and other wildflowers.
