Breedtsnek, is a bugger of a gravel pass over the Magaliesberg Ranges, set along the T3 district dirt road from Hekpoort. This one of those ‘must crank’ rides if you’re addicted to the rush of high-speed, downhill rolling.
A couple of quiet return options along undulating secondary dirt roads make this demanding 50 km return ride a favourite training session for riders looking for time in the saddle. There is also an easier 20 km return option from Sugarbush Hill Cottages.
A privately owned nature reserve is situated in the Magaliesberg, with excellent access to some of the best trails criss-crossing these majestic ranges. If you’re an adventurous mountain biker, the 12 km MTB trail on Mountain Sanctuary makes up part of the infamous Magalies Monster MTB race; so get cranking past crystal-clear mountain pools and extraordinary rock formations.
Take on the Sparkling Waters Hotel MTB. Distance is self determined. You can jeep and singletrack with the challenge of taming the “Monster”, a tough 9 km of pristine climbing through awesome rock formations, followed by an exhilarating 6 km downhill ride back.
The MTB Trail starts at the Hadeda Camp next to the Hennops River, which you immediately cross by cable car. Quite a cool way to get your adrenaline spiking, I’d say … The first section of the track follows farm roads on a working cattle farm, while the second part of the ride is way more challenging. Here, there are a few dongas where riders will have fun crossing obstacles of various difficulty levels, before finishing with a sweeping single-track next to the river course.
The total distance is 15 km, but with various escape options for the average joe or kids keen to get home. The trail is also pretty well marked, so you should not get lost. Please note this is a multi-use trail system, with hikers, mountain bikers and 4x4 vehicles, so please be considerate.
The Hennops Mountain Bike Trail is situated west of the R511, between the N14 (Krugersdorp highway) and R104 (Church street ext) 4 way stop at the Hennops Picnic Spot and Hiking Trail. It is a good destination year-round, but choose your timing to avoid rush hour.
Take to the skies for an aerial view of the splendour of Hartbeespoort - from hot air ballooning to a 1.2 km cableway that summits above the Hartbeespoort Dam. This is particularly fun for families with gut-thumping views across the Magaliesberg, the dam and their immediate surrounds. You can even sip a cocktail at the top, or explore the Dassie Loop on foot.
