Boating Experiences
Those looking for boating experiences can head down to Port Own in Velddrif. There are several adventure companies that will take visitors out on a speed boat to enjoy the vast West Coast ocean and marine life.
Enjoy a leisure boat cruise or for the more active, water sports such as water skiing or deep sea fishing. Sailing is also a popular activity, as well as jet skiing.
The sea itself is rather muddy, as is often the case at river mouths, so if you prefer you can spend a couple of happy hours sitting on the beach and chatting with some local fishermen that will tell you fascinating stories about the West Coast region.
Canoeing
Canoeing on the Berg River is a fun, leisurely activity that takes visitors from Hopefield to Velddrif. It is a relatively easy downstream kayak and the emphasis is on relaxation - the water is quiet and serene, so the whole family can enjoy a trip down the river with beautiful surrounds. Kayaking on the river is a great way to experience the bird life of the West Coast - Berg River is home to thousands of waterfowl in springtime, and the wild flowers are also a spectacular sight.
The Berg River Canooze Trail a 2 day trip, and visitors can enjoy two overnight farmstays. You’ll be able to experience beautiful scenery while lazily rowing along to your final destination, which is Velddrif. If you have time, make a stop at the saltpans in the area to see flamingos.
