The Murludi Hiking Trail consists of a range of walking trails in the northern part of the Tulbagh valley. From the height of the trails, you’ll be able to drink in the stunning views of the wine valley.
The trails are quite easy and scenic, and walkers can enjoy crossing mountain streams, drinking from fresh flowing water and taking in the natural beauty. The route’s terrains vary and are interesting to hike. The Groot Winterhoek Wilderness Area offers a series of day and overnight hiking trails that are pre-designated, like De Tronk to Die Hel and Groot Kliphuis to Perdevlei via jeep track.
You can also follow your own path through the indigenous vegetation of fynbos. Groot Winterhoek is a dream for the hardy hiker. It offers incredible mountain views, water streams and swim holes that add to the natural beauty of the area. The rock formations are also quite interesting to view, as well as caves with rock art that visitors can view.
The Oude Kerk Volksmuseum is home to three historic buildings of Tulbagh. After the earthquake of 1969, it was decided that more emphasis should be placed on preserving the town’s historic architectural heritage, which led to the establishment of the Volksmuseum.
The church building is house number 1 and showcases Cape furniture and colonial artefacts. House number 6 is the Earthquake Museum and sheds light on the valley’s history, and how the town was rebuilt after the earthquake. The third house of the museum complex is number 22 and is known as the Ou Volks museum.
It is a small Cape Dutch cottage that has been restored, and depicts ordinary life of 200 years ago. The museum is only open on the first and last weekend of each month during winter.
Visitors can explore the beautiful Tulbagh Valley countryside on horseback. Nature trails will take you through vineyards and wheat fields that lead to the foothills of the Winterhoek Mountains. The view of the mountains and surroundings are quite spectacular.
The trails can be tailored to suit any and everyone, and ranges from supervised pony rides to half day/full day trails. Every trail ride includes instruction, a helmet and a saddle. The one hour trail is a leisurely ride with scenic views and is suited for a beginner. For the more experienced rider, the 2-3 hour trail is a better option. The rides are held at sunrise as well as sunset to ensure beautiful scenery.
