The Umlalazi Nature Reserve is a hiker's and birder's paradise, KwaZulu-Natal.

Mtunzini has various outdoor activities to enjoy for both adventurers and those wanting to relax. The Umlalazi Nature Reserve lies between Mtunzini and the sea, on a strip of coastline that stretches from the mouth of the Mlalazi River to the border with Amatikulu Nature Reserve.

There are several hiking and mountain biking trails within the nature reserve that offer an amazing nature experience. You can start just outside the reserve, via a boardwalk that takes you through a swamp forest, which is known as the Raphia Palm Forest. Add this as an extra leg to any day's hiking in the area.

The easiest and shortest hike/bike ride, a mere 15 minutes, is regarded as one of the best routes, because it takes hikers through one of the most beautiful examples of a mangrove forest in the country, via John Dunn's Pool. The Siyaya Coastal Dune Forest Trail is circular and is a little more challenging as you follow along a beach trail. The Mlalazi River mouth trail starts on the footpath and winds along 8 km of stunning river views.

Mtunzini Beach

Mtunzini beach is a great stretch of coastline that offers visitors a chance to relax, unwind and soak up the sunshine. There are some spots where you can fish, and the Indian Ocean makes swimming a fun and warm activity.

The beach is surrounded by sand dunes, so dune surfing is a must for those wanting a bit of adventure. You can also do some bird spotting on the boardwalk that borders the Raphia Palm Forest, so take your binoculars along and see if you can spot the Palm-nut vulture (Gypohierax angolensis), attracted to the area by the large raphia palms. This is one of the rarest birds of prey in South Africa.
