Things to Do in Magaliesburg

The Cradle of Gold

The remarkable Cradle of Humankind reaches back through history for literally millions of years. A myriad of ancient fossils, including Professor Philip Tobias’s world-famous Mrs Ples, were discovered at the Sterkfontein Caves, and an underground visit to view the fantastic rock formations, subterranean lake or Silberberg Grotto is a must. Also, pop into the award-winning Visitor Interpretation Centre at Maropeng.

A trip into the bowels of the earth to explore Blaauwbank Historic Gold Mine will introduce you to a world of cocopans, picks and shovels. Don a hardhat, crush some ore and even pan your own gold. Best of all, they have the only permit in the country that allows you to take that gold home. The precious metal was discovered in the latter half of the 19th century and, in due course, the construction of a railway line added to Magaliesburg’s strategic importance.

The Blaauwbank mine in Magaliesburg is home of the oldest mine in Gauteng. Besides tourism, the main income generating activity of Magaliesburg and the surrounding area is agriculture. Beef, maize, and large scale vegetable farming are most prevalent. The region is not only a geological and historical treasure trove, but also punches way above its weight when it comes to natural grandeur. The village, river and mountain range got their name from Chief Mohale, ruler of the Po people who were living in the area when the first settlers arrived.
