Kouga Cultural Centre

According to the greater Kouga’s social landscape this area was occupied by human ancestors up to more than a million years ago. This region is one where, in terms of anatomy, the first modern people’ emerged in the world, estimated at about 120 000 years ago. It is this legacy that is celebrated in the Kouga Cultural Centre in Humansdorp.

The building’s design also involves the expression of the “African Renaissance”. This is repeated in exhibitions and displays in the centre which include traditional African healers, live traditional ceremonies, Khoisan rock art exhibition, archaeological display and a fynbos expo.

Boskloof Hiking Trail

This is a 3 km forest walk with an abundance of wild bird species, indigenous trees, Fynbos, small antelope and monkeys. Entrance in Voortrekker Road, next to Indaba House. No permit is required.

Humansdorp Museum

Watermill

The Watermill is situated at the entrance to Humansdorp, next to the Kouga Cultural Centre. It was built in 1974 and restored in 2002. Humansdorp was established as a church town in 1849, with the church council as land owner and town manager. The council realised that a mill would be both a convenience and an asset to the town, since wheat could be grinded to bread flour for the community.

The mill in Humansdorp was one of eighteen mills that N.P.H. Rademeyer erected in his lifetime (1812 – 1890). The mill served its purpose up to the turn of the century, when an electronic mill replaced the slower watermill.

Hero’s Acre

This is a cemetery in Du Plessis Street. Here visitors can view a monument with the names of soldiers killed in action in the First and Second World Wars.
