De Rust is known for its production of excellent red and white wines. With grapes grown in the fertile soils of the Swartberg Mountains, it’s no wonder the wineries in the area have received numerous local and international awards.
The Mons Ruber Estate has been producing wine since the mid-1800’s, with a rich history of distillation. The estate is celebrated for its white dessert wines (jerepigo), port and witblits. Their brandy is still distilled using traditional methods - over an open outdoor fire. Tastings are hosted in a building dating back to 1854, and visitors can enjoy a glass of brandy while marvelling at the history of the estate.
Domein Doornkraal lies in the shadow of the Swartberg mountains and produces a wide range of red and white wines. They also produce sparkling wine bottled under the label Tickled Pink, and a tasting at this estate will be well worth the visit.
Excelsior Vlakteplaas has been farming grapes for the last 80 years, and the present winemaker is the fifth generation to produce wine. The farm is well-known for their Muscadel and Jerepigo wine. Their sweet wine cultivars are also quite popular, because of the Little Karoo’s sorching summers.
Meiringspoort waterfall is one of De Rust’s most beautiful attractions; it is a free-of-charge spot where locals and visitors can enjoy breathtaking natural beauty while enjoying the cool waters. The waterfall is situated on the Meiringspoort Pass, so the drive up there will be worthwhile as the scenery of the Klein Karoo surrounds you.
The waterfall came to be after rains of 1996 flooded the region and caused the road to collapse. It formed a little pool, which is now the perfect spot for a picnic on your way into the Klein Karoo. The pool is safe for swimming, with some spots deep enough for diving.
