Swartruggens

North West Farming Town

Also known as Rodeon, Swartruggens is a quaint farming village in the North West province that originated in 1907 when a railway line was built from Krugersdorp to Mafikeng. The Swartruggens station was built on the farm Brakfontein.

The name “Swartruggens” refers to the series of black ridges (hills) that surround the town. The Dutch Reformed Church is the oldest building in town.

Mostly cattle farming territory, diamonds were discovered north of the town in 1932. Following the Siege of Mafeking during the South African War, Swartruggens became a supply depot. Visitors often elect to stay at a bushveld lodge as they can view wildlife. The ostrich farm near the town is also popular with visitors.

Alternatively, the visitors can go to Elands River battlefield and graves from the South African War of 1988-1902. Nearby attractions include Sun City Resort and Pilanesberg Nature Reserve.
