Port Shepstone Lighthouse

The Port Shepstone Lighthouse has become brown with age, but it still stands out with its checkered black and white exterior. The original light beacon was operational in the 1800s, but was replaced with an iron cast tower brought all the way from England in 1905. It was erected at the Umzimkulu River mouth, where it still stands to this day.

The uniquely painted lighthouse is said to ‘challenge the deep waters in a perpetual game of nautical chess’. It is a prominent landmark in Port Shepstone, so be sure to visit it if you are in the area.
