Mountain Biking

If mountain biking is your preferred pastime, then look no further than Deelfontein in the Free State province. Dampoort Farm, straddling the very edge of the Vredefort Dome Conservancy, boasts a range of trails through indigenous African bush, following cattle paths, jeep tracks or gravel roads.

There are several mountain biking trails at Deelfontein.

The Dwarsberg Trails (20 km) are not for mountain biking softies, so best you get ready to dodge thorns and cow pats while you call on all your rock-riding skills. Day trippers are welcome by prior arrangement, and self-catering accommodation is available.

Visitors can opt for trail running or hiking in Deelfontein.

Day hiking in the Deelfontein area is also a popular activity, and there is a large number of shorter and longer day routes that invite the visitor to explore the area on foot. The routes are suited for trail running as well, so if you are an avid runner, remember to pack your running shoes!

In terms of water activities on the adjoining Vaal River, there are a few options for avid water babies. Canoe trips, fly-fishing and swimming is best enjoyed during the summer when it’s sunny and warm, and if you prefer a marked-off body of water, the Deelfontein Guesthouse has a swimming pool.

Other activities include horse riding, 4x4 routes, star gazing, bird watching and tree identification. There is really something for everyone at Deelfontein to enjoy.
