Nestled between the legendary Umzimkhulu and Mzimkhulwana Rivers, Lake Eland Game Reserve spans an impressive 10 000 ha. The mountain biking here is pretty much legendary, covering everything from scenic gorge rides to strenuous climbs along Dunstone’s Pass deep in the valley.
Expect to ride anything from 4 km to at least 45 km along well-maintained reserve roads. The trails wind through four distinct ecosystems, ensuring a unique opportunity to view plains game such as giraffe, herds of eland, wildebeest, zebra, shy mountain reedbuck and the elusive bushbuck.
All the trails are well marked, with the 45 km route boasting enough single-track to test even experienced riders. There is also a 4 km trail ideal for children. The reserve also offers good bass fishing in a freshwater lake, horse trails, hiking and excellent birding, paintball, a challenging 4x4 track, a thrilling 80 m suspension bridge and zip line tours.
The little-known 24 km Oribi Gorge is a spectacular kloof of approximately 500 m deep and up to 6 km wide in places. The gorge was cut over the ages by the Mzimkhulwana River on its inexorable journey to the Indian Ocean, and mountain bikers can count this as a great outdoor playground. Riding options abound on single-track, dirt and tarmac, with Oribi Gorge Hotel as a safe starting point.
Crank onto Fairacres Estate at the top of the gorge along a winding 9 km route well suited to intermediate riders. The trail follows the same route as the Baboon and Camel hiking trails upon the sheer edges of the gorge; although technical in places, this is a popular and enjoyable ride.
Adrenaline junkies will love the abseiling, rafting and gorge swing, while hikers and horse riders will enjoy the spectacular scenery at these world-renowned viewpoints. The Oribi Gorge Hotel is also Birder Friendly.
