The Origin of Meyer von Wielligh

Meyer von Wielligh is a dynamic design partnership between designers, Abrie von Wielligh and Norman Meyer which goes back about 15 years. The pair first met each other as furniture design students at Furntech in Goerge, which is South Africa’s only centre of excellence for furniture design.

During their tenure at Furntech, the duo were met with a course requirement for practical work experience at a design manufacturer and instead of seeking employment, they embarked on a journey to establish their own manufacturing business.

Abrie and Norman’s design studio and workshop is based in George, on the Garden Route and their showroom is in Cape Town. The area has a history and tradition of furniture making using indiginous woods.

The company has grown throughout the years and the pair have gone on to collaborate on collections with West Elm in the United States and Southern Guild which is an international design collective. Meyer von Wielligh’s collaboration with Southern Guild created furniture and limited-edition art pieces that  were distributed as far as Dubai and Sydney.

The pair’s passion for furniture design has fueled their success throughout the years. Both founders share a profound respect for the versatile textures, deep colours and materials that nature provides them to enhance their creative design process and bring each idea to life, to decorate the spaces of people to move through, work in and make a home from.
