Napier

Overberg Tourist Destination

Back-roading off the N2 into the southern Overberg’s rolling hills will trip you past a number of truly interesting towns. Napier, nestling at the foot of the sublimely named Soetmuisberg, is one of them, and has bloomed from a small town into a tourist destination over the past decade or so. To get here, follow the R316 for approximately 55 km from Caledon.

Napier was founded around the placement of a new church in the Overberg.

Undulating hills, blanketed in fields of wheat, barley and canola line the roads into Napier, and once there you will find a delightfully rural dorp where Victorian cottages go toe-to-toe with neat, modern buildings. Although the pace is slow, this is no sleepy little backwater, with many retired professionals and rural creatives driving a strong-willed community.

The Napier region can look quite barren during the late summer when the surrounding fields have been harvested, but the brilliant hues of yellow, green and gold more than make up for this during the rest of the year, and especially after the winter rains.

Napier was founded after rival preachers in Bredasdorp argued about where to locate the church. Napier is a very small town with a toy museum and a militaria museum. It also has several country stores, an engaging little farm stall/restaurant on the main road and, supposedly, the biggest sundial in South Africa. Tourists looking to break away from city life for a weekend will find great Napier accommodation options and charming sights in Napier.
