The Matroosberg Nature Reserve is a scenic reserve located on the farm Erfdeel (a working fruit, vegetable and protea farm) outside Ceres in the Western Cape. It covers more than 1 000 ha of mountain area, including the infamous Matroosberg Peak – culminating at 2 249 m above sea level, it is the highest in the Boland.
This peak is a rugged gem part of the craggy Hex River ranges in a breathtaking stretch of land that forms part of the reserve.
If you are brave and manage to reach the top of this peak, or close, you can see forever: a panoramic view over the Warm Bokkeveld, Ceres, Droë Hoek, Koue Bokkeveld and the Ceres Karoo, including rival mountain peaks in the Witzenberg, Cederberg and Du Toitskloof Mountains.
The reserve offers a range of fun outdoor activities for the whole family, including farm tours, quad biking, fishing, abseiling, kloofing, 4x4 trails, mountain biking and horse riding. During winter, visitors can enjoy snowboarding and ice climbing when the peak gets covered in sheets of snow. It makes for a picturesque visit.
