Laingsburg

Gateway to the Karoo

Often touted as being the gateway to the Karoo, Laingsburg makes for an ideal entrance into a landscape known equally for its arid, semi-desert climate and for its friendly inhabitants. Situated along the N1 highway, travellers from Cape Town can reach the charming town in about 3 hours (264,1 km) via the N1.

This is a worthwhile drive, in part for the natural beauty explorers will see en route to Laingsburg, as well as for the quaint towns along the way such as Touws River and Matjiesfontein that will make for pleasant pit stops.

The modern Karoo town, however, is sure to claim the title for most pleasant town of the Karoo. After all, it has maintained a tradition of hospitality since the mid 1700s when Laingsburg farmers offered 16th century travellers accommodation, food, and fodder to feed their animals.
