Kuruman
Oasis of the Kalahari

Kuruman is the principal town of the Kalahari region on the Namakwari Route in the Northern Cape. The town is one of those special places endowed with incredibly picturesque scenery and a unique beauty.

The Eye of Kuruman, a natural spring in the centre of the town.

All of this is attributable to a natural fountain in the centre of Kuruman, known as ‘The Eye’. The abundance of water produces an unexpected swathe of green amidst the barren plains, and Kuruman is justly known as the “Oasis of the Kalahari’.

As Kuruman lies virtually on the edge of the Kalahari at the foot of a range of low hills, one can easily imagine the possible extreme temperatures experienced here. However, it has relatively mild weather patterns compared to other Northern Cape towns, such as Upington and Springbok.

The sheer, unspoilt beauty of Kuruman, and the fact that it lies on the main route between Gauteng and Namibia/Cape Town via Upington, makes it a popular place to stop.
