As Klerksdorp is one of the oldest towns in the North West, there are plentiful historic places of interest that visitors can spend time exploring. The Klerksdorp Mine offers tours of the mine, which gives guests a glimpse of early mining in South Africa. The Klerksdorp Museum, which was formerly a prison, is a beautiful sandstone building that houses memorabilia of early town life, as well as local and social history.
There is an old cemetery in town for the British Soldiers who died in the Anglo-Boer War and children who died in concentration camps in the same war. The Railway Station is also worth a visit, where tourists can see the Old Flag Room, which was opened by President Paul Kruger when the line from Krugersdorp reached the town in 1897 - Klerksdorp's first national monument.
Another attraction is the Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve, which is located just outside of town. It is home to a number of wildlife species, including rhino. Bird watchers can spot up to 150 different species of birds. It is an ideal destination for a fun family outing.
For the more adventurous guests there are various trails to hike and mountain bike, such as the Oudorp hiking trail, a 12 km scenic route through the surrounding area of the town. The Eland 4x4 Trail is also a popular pastime and will take drivers through bushveld terrain. It is more of a scenic drive, allowing you to take in the natural surrounds and spot game such as small antelope.
The main tourist attraction of Klerksdorp is Goudkoppie, which is mining shafts excavated in the 1880’s located near the town.
