Kaapsehoop

Known as Kaapschehoop, Kaapsehoop in Mpumalanga is the sort of place you'd miss if you didn't know it existed. If you want to take a detour off the beaten track, leave the N4 at the paper plant called Ngodwana and drive for 13 km up the mountainside to the idiosyncratic village of Kaapsehoop.

From Kaapsehoop, you can return to the N4 or you can continue on the back roads to Nelspruit (about 30 km). Located high in the mountains, amid jagged spikes of weathered sandstone, this tiny village has only a few quirky shops and a couple of restaurants. The houses are built up against rocky outcrops and against a hill, and you can’t see them from the main road.

There are hardly any roads in Kaapsehoop, which is said to have wild horses living around it. It is beautiful here, and you’ll fall in love with the famous herd of wild horses who wander blissfully through the town. There’s also a fantastic walk through the rocks to the edge of the escarpment, offering unforgettable views or pop into the intriguing shop selling second-hand treasures.
