Hogsback is a charming, tranquil Eastern Cape town set high in the Amatola (or Amathole) Mountains and surrounded by old Afro-montane forests.
Escape to an enchanted forest which is home to numerous waterfalls, clear streams and, at 800 years, the oldest Yellowwood tree in the Eastern Cape. Take a picnic and hike, mountain bike or take a horseback ride into the Amatola Mountain range which includes indigenous forests and pine plantations. There is plenty trout fishing at Hogsback. A truly spectacular sight awaits at Kettlespout Falls. Under the right conditions with a good flow of water and the wind blowing strongly in the right direction, this water crashes down cliffs then rises as much as 5 metres upwards before coming down in a spray of mist.
This evocatively forested town at times resembles Middle Earth! The peaks at Hogsback are alleged to have served as inspiration for J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel - Lord of the Rings, in particular the fictional forest of Mirkwood. Robinson Dam is not only great for picnicking; you can swim in a natural jacuzzi. The more adventurous hearted may consider abseiling down the 35 metre Madonna and Child Waterfall into the indigenous forests!
Birders will be interested to know that as a result of diverse ecosystems, Hogsback includes raptors, montane birds, grassland and forest birds. Some homes are surrounded by as many as 100 birds. Be on the look-out for the endangered Cape Parrot.
