Himeville

The small village of Himeville is set in the Southern Drakensberg, an alpine landscape of dramatic beauty just off the beaten tourist track. Himeville was named after the then Prime Minister of Natal, Sir Albert Henry Hime.

He was a road engineer elected as Prime Minister of Natal in 1889. There are several nature reserves and numerous crystal clear lakes and rivers, with the Sani Pass (the highest pass between South Africa and Lesotho) one of the obvious highlights of this area. The Himeville Museum is one of the top rural museums in the country due to its wide range of exhibits.

Exhibits range from fossils and stone age artifacts to a comprehensive display on the Bushmen, the early settlers as well as African beadwork and artifacts. The Himeville Nature Reserve was proclaimed in 1973 and is home to species of antelopes and birds on the small dams.
