If ever a dorp deserved a double-thumbs up, Haenertsburg has got to be it! Both undiscovered and off-the-beaten-track, this quaint and under-rated little village perches upon the slopes of the Wolkberg and Drakensberg mountains, slumbering within the shadow of a towering granite massif known as the Iron Crown, or "The Mountain" as it is called by the locals, the highest peak in the Limpopo Province.
Haenertsburg originated as a gold rush town in 1887, but there is nothing industrial about the craggy peaks, cascading waterfalls, tranquil lakes, rolling grasslands and magnificent indigenous forests that envelop the town.
Giant yellowwood trees and gigantic stinkwoods shade the many trails spider-webbing from the epicentre of this rather eccentric village, and hikers, bird watchers, trail runners and mountain bikers will be blown away by a myriad of options.
