Groblershoop was founded in 1936 and named after a former Minister of Agriculture of the time. Groblershoop is a farming town in the Orange River Valley, east of Upington in the Northern Cape province, South Africa.
Development in this arid region started in 1929 by the construction of the Boegoeberg dam and water channels about 35km from the town.
It is the third largest dam in the Orange River and a popular holiday resorts a popular hotspot for angling and watersport. Groblershoop accommodation is available in the form of camping (at the dam), guestlodges in town or river-side chalets.
The Witsand Kalahari Nature Reserve is about 80km northeast from Groblershoop and offers mountain biking, accommodation and nature experiences such as a bird hide, short hikes and dune boarding.
