Gansbaai is a popular holiday destination situated in the Overberg region in the Western Cape. Favoured for its excellent shark cage diving, excellent beach and lagoon, and relaxed atmosphere, this seaside town is a great option for a family vacation, romantic getaway or solo adventure.
Gansbaai is the Afrikaans name for 'Goose Bay', which originated from the many geese that were found in the area in early times. Gansbaai was established around the local fishing industry, which has been the driving force behind the area's economy for many years. Situated in close proximity to Walker Bay, the town offers a sharp contrast from the bigger, busier and better known Hermanus.
Gansbaai is ideal for larger groups of tourists in search of the famous Southern Right Whale, who heads up here to escape the Antarctic winter. The whales arrive in late June and stay until October and are a magnificent sight to see. Apart from Whale spotting, the town also offers excellent fishing, water sports and various amazing accommodation options. Guests can also enjoy tranquil mountain and beach walks, and the most delicious seafood imaginable.
