Hiking trails are aplenty in Fort Beaufort and vary for all levels. Which is favourable for large groups with hikers ranging from novice to experienced. The Kat River hiking trail is a popular, route located in the Winterberg Mountains. If strenuous walking to any degree does not appeal to you yet natural beauty does, you certainly cannot go wrong in Fort Beaufort.

Fort Beaufort is without a doubt a place for nature lovers. Its land is enriched with diverse plant species native to the Western and Eastern Cape regions. In the picturesque valley of Fort Beaufort lie semi-desert landscapes populated by a variety of fynbos, deep lush ravines overflowing with ferns and looming Liana treetops. 

Be sure to take your camera along. The striking environment begs to be photographed by all visitors alike and will make for a superb addition to your holiday photo album of the Eastern Cape region.

Caves and Wildlife

Not only known for its historical sites, Fort Beaufort, is also known for the many opportunities it presents to experience some of the most unique caves and wildlife species in Southern Africa. Wildlife includes various species of bushbuck, wildebeest and an array of bird species. Pack in your binoculars and get a closer look of eagles, hornbills, the Cape parrot and many more bird species flying across the African skyline.

From the wonderful Afromontane forests in the valley to the many archaeological sites in the area you can also discover well-preserved caves, which showcase prehistoric rock art paintings from the indigenous San groups who occupied the land many centuries ago.
