Ezemvelo Nature Reserve in Gauteng province is without a doubt one of the best-kept eco-secrets here on the Bankenveld, about two hours from the hustle and bustle of Pretoria and Johannesburg. Set just far enough away from the concrete jungle, Ezemvelo Nature Reserve boasts peace and quiet on 10,000 ha of preserved grassland and savanna biomes, rocky outcrops and wetlands.
Spectacular cliffs, amazing rock formations, ancient cave paintings and magnificent views over the Wilge River, together with a wide variety of game and bird species, are reason enough to pack up and head over to Ezemvelo Nature Reserve for a weekend break.
Find your way (from Pretoria): Head out on the N4 towards eMalahleni (Witbank) and exit at Bronkhorstspruit. Follow the R25 north for 4.5km before turning right at the brown Ezemvelo sign onto a dirt road. Continue for 20 km on this road to the Ezemvelo Nature Reserve entrance.
