Elands Bay (also known as Elandsbaai) is one of those spots Cape Town surfers and sandveld lovers talk about in hushed tones. It’s a place many want to keep a secret.
The town is a seaside gem with lots of outdoor activities and coastline adventures. North of Cape Town the West Coast is endless scrubby flatland with one exception: Baboon Point. This craggy headland creates its own peninsula; in its lee is the little town of Elands Bay.
The promontory dominates the town in more ways than one. The bluff creates a degree of shelter on this windswept shoreline and has provided a place of habitation for millennia. San hunter-gatherers harvested the shores while Verlorenvlei, a long stretch of water terminating at Elands Bay, offered fresh water. It was once rich in game and today the bird life is still exceptional.
