Eastern Cape Coastal Route

Alexandria is a small farming town and one of the most important chicory producing areas in South Africa. Visit Woody Cape, a narrow stretch of pristine indigenous forest bordering the Alexandria dune field, one of the largest active dune fields in the world, and home to diverse birdlife.

Boknes and Canon Rocks, small holiday hamlets, both very popular amongst fishing enthusiasts. Cannon Rocks is a world-class kite surfing area. Hike from Boknes to the famous Dias Cross, erected in 1488 and situated in the marine section of the Addo Elephant National Park.

Kenton-on-Sea and Bushmans River, offers a picture-perfect coastal setting, between two great rivers, and boasts the Kariega Blue Flag beach. There are unspoilt beaches, caves, and rock pools excellent for snorkeling, and sheltered bays created by unusual rock formations. Hiking, horse riding, great fishing are enjoyed in the area as well as mountain biking, canoeing, birding and game viewing.

Port Alfred, the heart of the Sunshine Coast, boasts a well-known surfing beach, a spectacular marina and popular small boat harbour. The area is a Mecca for all water sports and offers excellent angling. There are wonderful coral reefs and an excellent dive school. It is also home to a Royal Golf course and excellent restaurants. The world class St. Francis Health Spa is situated just outside Port Alfred.  

Bathurst is a fascinating English style 1820 Settler Village showcasing an eclectic mix of old and new. Established by British Settlers, many of the original buildings have been preserved, such as the Pig and Whistle, at the heart of the village, the oldest existent pub in the country, built 1831.

Kleinmonde, Riet River and Rufanes are surrounded by an abundance of rivers, and offer great canoeing, birding and horse riding opportunities. The unspoilt beaches are flat and ideal for hiking. The river banks are crowded with indigenous vegetation and ancient cycads that only add to the incredible atmosphere.
