The impressive Du Toitskloof Pass lies between Paarl and Worcester as it snakes up and over the majestic Du Toitskloof Mountains. The surrounding area forms part of the Limietberg Nature Reserve and is a pristine World Heritage Site.
Though the Huguenot Tunnel is a striking example of road engineering and will take 11 km off your journey, the view from the top of the pass over the Paarl Valley is enough reason to take your time and admire this imposing outdoor playground.
The rugged mountains, steep kloofs and deep valleys are covered in mountain fynbos, topped by Du Toits Peak at 1 996 m, and are notorious for their unpredictable weather conditions; be prepared!
Your hiking, paddling, mountain biking and fly-fishing options here are unlimited! Hiking is a must do if you’re up to challenging these mountains. Several trails are accessible from Du Kloof Lodge, and then you also have the Cape Nature classics like the popular Krom River and Elands River Trails.
Paddlers can enjoy the rapids of the Molenaars River, while mountain bikers can explore the Slanghoek Mountain Reserve’s trails. Du Kloof Lodge, Slanghoek Mountain Reserve as well as the Dwarsberg Trout Hideaway all boast with stunning fly-fishing spots.
The Breedekloof Wine Route is located in the beautiful Breede River Valley, offering visitors an array of wine farms and wineries to visit and taste some of South Africa’s top quality wines. Worcester and Rawsonville are among the favourite spots on the wine route, and the spectacular Breede River adds to the pristine scenery of the route.
Du Toitskloof Winery is one of the most popular stops, boasting internationally famous wines and cultivars. The estate was founded in 1962 and Du Toitskloof Wines now consists of 22 members. The winery has displayed great innovation in terms of cultivars and cellar techniques. They produce a wide range of red and white wines under the Fairtrade empowerment project.
