Just 40 kilometres north of Pretoria on the N1, the brand-new Dinokeng is practically in the city’s backyard. On 22 September 2011 the Gauteng Premier, Nomvula Mokonyane, officially opened the reserve. In the same week, the first lions arrived and a herd of elephants followed a month later.
The park’s founders claim they now have the first, free-roaming Big Five in Gauteng in over 100 years. The greater Dinokeng area covers about 280 000 hectares of farms and rural land incorporating Roodeplaat, Cullinan, Rayton and the open bushveld north of the Moloto Road (R573). It offers game drives, bush picnics, full and self-catering accommodation, camping and caravans.
Dinokeng (from the Tswana term ‘a place of rivers’), is a much underrated tourism region situated to the northeast of Johannesburg and Pretoria. Here, within the expansive catchment area of the Olifants and Limpopo Rivers, a range of destinations entice inhabitants of Tshwane’s metropolitan region keen on a quick weekend break. Rietvlei, the Tswaing Crater and Roodeplaat Dam are just a few of the potential places to add to your list.
