The Beautiful Vineyard

De Doorns, the town at heart of the South African grape industry, lies within the beautiful Hex River Valley.

The valley, which changes its beautiful scenery through the seasons, from green to gold, is surrounded by the foothills, one of which is Matroosberg, the highest mountain peak in the Western Cape at 2249 metres, about 140 km east of Cape Town.

De Doorns is the centre of a wine and table grape farming community. De Doorns is beautiful to visit in the autumn, when vineyards surrounding the farms are decked out in shades of amber, yellow, green and red. Activities in the town range from wine tasting at the cellars to pack shed tours to see how export table grapes are sorted and packed.

Other than wine tasting, the area surrounding the town can be explored on the Kopbeenskloof 4x4 trail, on mountain bike - the Two Tunnel trial - as well as aboard the Hexpass Express, a revamped railway car.
