Claremont is part of the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town. Known for its lush greenery, this suburb has a central business district and beautiful residential areas.
Claremont, in the early days, was a small, friendly place where owners of businesses were known to everyone - there was healthy rivalry amongst these friendly people who often lived in the upper storeys of their shops, with breathtaking views of the numerous trees that grew there then. Shops closed on Wednesday afternoons, but Saturdays encouraged late-night adventures, when doors were kept open until 11 'o'clock.
Until its amalgamation with the City of Cape Town in 1913, Claremont had its own mayor. The town hall was conveniently placed opposite the station, and very near to the Main Road, where trams rattled past to and from the terminus at Wynberg. Today little remains - many buildings have been demolished and replaced.
