Aptly named the ‘dale of citrus’ from the name for oranges, Citrus aurantium or Citrus sinensis. Beautiful citrus groves cover the landscape and a vast pack house marshals and dispatch the golden fruit to many customers all over the world.
The town was founded by the Dutch Reformed Church in 1916 and became a municipality on 1 March 1957.
Citrusdal is ideally situated for exploration of the surrounding mountains, valleys, farmlands and wildflowers. Between May and October Citrusdal becomes a bustling town as it is the citrus packing season. The pack house, which opened in 1946, staggeringly packs over 60 000 tons of citrus ever year. A visit to the pack house is a worthwhile stop. Besides citrus fruits wine is also produced in the area and is worth a taste or two.
The town also has a museum and traditional Boerehuisie, which exhibits items on the history of the valley plus an art gallery exhibiting local artists work. Sweet Citrus "They say elephants can smell citrus from kilometres away. Surprising then that pachyderms do not overrun Citrusdal in the Western Cape from April to October during the citrus season. The fragrance and sight of orange blossoms in the citrus orchards attract people from kilometres away."
