The scenic town of Caledon is situated in the Cape Overberg, surrounded by rolling hills of canola and wheat fields, set against the beautiful backdrop of the Swartberg. Caledon is primarily a farming and agriculture district, which involves grain production and livestock farming.
The mediterranean climate allows for warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Caledon town centre is the usual blend of shops and churches, and it may not look like much to the passing motorist. Stop the car, however, and the place comes alive. There is an interesting historical walk around town, which takes in most of the important old buildings that are squeezed between the modern, low-rise office blocks.
Tourists can pick up the walking guide from the old city hall, which now does double duty as the local museum, art gallery and tourist info centre. Caledon also boasts a well-established Wild Flower garden, just outside town.
Caledon is a fantastic weekend destination for families, lovebirds or adventure groups. Be sure to pack your camera as there are great photographic opportunities along the way to the town.
