What to See

The Shipwreck Museum is a unique attraction in Bredasdorp. It has an eclectic collection of period furniture, glass bottles and a separate maritime wing, full of ships’ figure heads and other artefacts from the many vessels that came to a sodden end on the treacherous rocks and reefs of the Agulhas coastline.

Sailing enthusiasts will be delighted by the exhibit. The adjacent old coach house contains an interesting collection of Cape carts, a Scotch cart, a two-wheel tip cart drawn by horses or oxen, two horse-drawn hearses and an old fire engine.

The Old Parsonage is a typical strandveld house, and has been furnished with articles salvaged along the coast.

The Audrey Blignault Room at the tourism bureau is dedicated to the Afrikaans author, who was born in Bredasdorp. The bureau also has an interesting display on the Foot of Africa Marathon, the continent's southernmost marathon.

King Proteas

Bredasdorp is the closest town of any significance to Heuningberg Nature Reserve, Cape Agulhas and to the De Hoop Nature Reserve. South of Bredasdorp, the 800-ha Heuningberg Nature Reserve provides protection to over 300 plant species, including eight of the 14 genera of the protea family, a rich diversity of ericas, buchu and geophytes.

the over 36 endemics to be seen are the Bredasdorp lily 'Cyrtanthus guthrieae' and the pincushion 'Leucospermum heterophyllum'. There are many short walks, as well as two longer routes with views of the Indian Ocean.

Quite walks with friends.

At first glance, there ain’t much happening in Bredasdorp, especially on a Sunday. It’s a large, dusty place, and it functions mainly as the gateway to Cape Agulhas, about 38 kilometres to the South. But there is life in Bredasdorp if you feel like looking.

Those who are not so keen on boats would do better to visit the nearby centre of town for a cup of coffee and cake.

The main Cape Agulhas tourism bureau is in the centre of Bredasdorp, and there is a Cape Nature Conservation booking office upstairs. From Bredasdorp, a tarred road leads South to Struisbaai and the Cape Agulhas headland. - David Fleminger
