Bellville is situated on the lower slopes of Tygerberg Hill, in the well-known northern suburbs of the Cape Town area. Bellville was originally known as "12-Myl-Pos” (12 Mile Post) because it is located 12 miles or 20 kilometres from central Cape Town.
Bellville was originally set up to serve rail commuters between Cape Town and was renamed Bellville in 1861 after Charles Bell, the surveyor-general.
Bellville is the centre of the northern suburbs of Cape Town and is surrounded by Plattekloof, Tygerberg and Durbanville. Being situated close to the N1 highway makes it a convenient location.
Whether you are coming or going, take time to discover this city behind the so-called “boerewors gordyn”, named so because the northern suburbs is traditionally where the majority of Cape Town’s Afrikaans community resides. You will soon discover that hospitality is ingrained in Bellville locals.
Places of interest include the Bellville Velodrome, Bellville Golf Course, Tygervalley Shopping Centre, Tygerberg Nature Reserve, Tygerberg Hospital and the University of the Western Cape.
