Bedford is a quaint town situated in the Eastern Cape. This gem of a dorp nestles at the foot of Kaggaberg along the southern edge of the Winterberg. Founded in 1854 by Andries Stockenström on his farm Maasström, Bedford was named after Lord Russel, the Duke of Bedford in England.
The breathtaking rainforest on the mountain slopes and higher-lying grass veldt ranges begs exploration. The town’s old prison, traditional stone Presbyterian Church and numerous homes showcase stunning 19th century architectural examples, while surrounding farms conceal some historical gems, including the Glen Lyndon church built in 1828.
Architect buffs will also enjoy the homesteads of Thomas Pringle as well as a number of influential Scottish and Dutch Settlers in town. Bedford is part of the Heritage Rose Route, created to showcase the growth of heritage roses in Eastern Cape towns.
